Tuesday Mind Dump (6/15/21)

June 15, 2021  |  Luke Simmons

• Funny how summer can be fast and slow at the same time.

• Specific days feel slower and it definitely feels like the overall pace is a bit more meandering.

• At the same time, tons has happened in just the last week.

• The big deal last week for our church and my family was Kids Camp (like VBS).

• It was a resounding success and a lot of fun — 5 days with 300 kids and about 150 volunteers.

• What a delight it was to see it take place across our campus.

• Since this was the first one in our current campus, we wondered how it would work.

• It worked amazingly well.

• The extra space made things feel way less chaotic and allowed for some better experiences — especially with all the games outside.

• The Kids team did just an incredible job of leading it and pulling it off.

• One of the best decisions was recruiting Andrew Manche to play the role of Captain Blackbird, a pirate with a blackbird named “Blackbeard.” 😆

• Andrew seems to have missed his true calling in life which was to be a Disney cast member or something.

• Man, he was good at it — just absolutely magnetic to the kids (and scary to a few of the young ones).

• Seth and I were reflecting on one of the lines from the main song, which talked about “searching for the ancient truth, handed down to me and you.”

• That’s what Kids Camp — and so much of our ministry as a church — is about.

• It’s why we love the next generation so much.

• Here are some other photos:

• So that was the big thing happening last week.

• Also went and saw a couple of movies — so much fun to go back to the theater.

• I hope the theaters make it.

• Saw A Quiet Place Part II with a buddy — it’s definitely not one Molly would be interested in.

• It was suspenseful, creepy, action-packed, and had some really neat parallelism in the storytelling that I appreciated.

• Then on Saturday, I took Abby and Caitlin to see In The Heights.

• We LOVED it — music, acting, choreography, special effects — all of it was great.

• The choreography of the scene at the big public swimming pool was just spectacular and I’ve never seen something like it.

• It was also really interesting to read up on the complicated backstory of how it went from an idea in Lin Manuel-Miranda’s head to Broadway to film.

• Was also a fun week of some cooking.

• Abby got a 100+ year old sourdough starter from a woman in our church and made a few loaves from it.

• Caitlin made my favorite chocolate chip cookies — with oatmeal and dark chocolate

• And I made a couple of different things from my favorite YouTube chef, Sam the Cooking Guy — his vodka pasta and his curry yogurt chicken.

• I actually made the curry yogurt dish with pork chops.

• The pasta was great, but the curry yogurt pork chops were pretty meh.

• Maybe I did something wrong.

• Also been a fun week of watching the Suns play and win.

• I don’t really have a loyalty when it comes to the NBA, so it’s been fun to hop onto the Suns bandwagon.

• Couldn’t really watch their games this season since our provider (YouTube TV) doesn’t carry Fox Sports Arizona anymore.

• But me and Hank have gotten to know them through NBA2K21 on Playstation.

• It’s funny — he knows all the players and what they’re good at from that game.

• So we usually watch the first quarter together and then he goes to bed.

• But in the morning he watches the rest of the game (or as much as he can handle).

• He also loves to watch the Cubs play and, with our free MLB.tv from T-Mobile (no sponsorship here I promise), we can watch them every day.

• The other day I turned on a game and saw them playing against the Cardinals with a FULL stadium at Wrigley.

• Made my heart SO happy.

• I don’t necessarily love the Cubs, but it’s sure fun to watch with my boy.

• This morning I took Abby and Caitlin to the airport for their annual Nana & Me: The Alabaster Cities Tour trip.

• It’s a trip they do with my mom, my aunt, and my cousin’s two daughters (six total people) — they are in year 7 of 10 of trying to get to all 50 state capitols.

• This year is the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho.

• They see the capitols and also do lots of fun sightseeing.

• Pretty dang special.

• And we miss them while they’re gone, even though it’s fun to get some extra time with just Mary and Hank.

• If you’ve made it this far, you might be interested in the latest “5 Things in 5 Minutes” — it’s a monthly thing we write up for staff and leaders in Redemption, but I’ll let you have a sneak-peek.

• This Sunday I’m preaching on Nehemiah 4… a very interesting passage for anybody trying to lead themselves or others, and such a fascinating case study in the sabotage that is present anytime somebody is leading change.

• Excited to study, prepare, and preach it.

• After some of the challenges of the last year, I’m hoping it’s timely.

• Well, that’s it for today.

• Have a good rest of your week.

• All of life is all for Jesus.
