Tuesday Mind Dump (2/16/16)

February 16, 2016  |  Luke Simmons

  • Really cool to see Redemption Flagstaff on Sunday.
  • Their Lead Pastor, Vince Garvey, asked me a few months ago to come up there and preach.
  • I’ve been to Flag a bunch and talked with Vince a lot about the congregation, but have never been there for a Sunday.
  • I though it was a solid service, even if I went long.
  • Was hard to cover all that Samson stuff in the allotted time.
  • Really cool space for a service at the Orpheum.
  • Kind of rough kids environment, but they’re working on it.
  • One highlight was seeing one of Gateway’s former students, Asher, now playing in the band up there while he attends NAU.
  • There were some other folks there who had connections to Gateway too.
  • Really pretty cool.
  • I love that we could send students to any of the four major universities and have a Redemption congregation very nearby.
  • The rest of the weekend was pretty rough.
  • Mary has had a double ear infection and Caitlin has been fighting off a fever and cough.
  • We thought they were better and could make the trip to Flagstaff.
  • We figured we’d go to church and then spend the afternoon sledding in the snow.
  • But when we arrived on Saturday night, Caitlin looked awful and had a 103˚ temperature.
  • Her and Mary coughed all night, which meant that Molly and I didn’t sleep too well.
  • OK, I slept fine — Molly didn’t sleep well.
  • So they actually weren’t able to attend church.
  • They came over to look at it beforehand, but we didn’t want to infect anyone else.
  • And sledding was out too, so we headed home after church.
  • But we mostly had fun in the car (I guess).
  • I heard that things went well at Gateway, including that 215 people were in the Box for the 5:00pm service.
  • That’s great!
  • So encouraged by folks who moved for the mission.
  • This Sunday we finish our study of Judges with one of the craziest stories in the Bible.
  • You really should read Judges 19-21 before you come.
  • After Judges, I’m doing a stand-alone message on the beauty and significance of baptism.
  • Then a three-week series called Fighting Fear.
  • It’s all about how God’s character is the antidote to some of our deepest fears.
  • Then Easter.
  • Wow, that’s coming fast.
  • Just finished reading The Speechwriter by Barton Swaim.
  • It was on a few “best of 2015” lists I saw and it was an enjoyable, quick, well-written book.
  • Reading a great church history book for my seminary program, The Story of Christianity.
  • Church history is fascinating.
  • Would love to teach a series or class on it sometime.
  • So eye-opening to see the ways the church has attempted to be faithful over the years.
  • I’m saddened by the death of Justice Scalia, but enjoyed this thoughtful tribute by Albert Mohler.
  • Going to be crazytown in Washington, D.C. for a while (as if it isn’t already).
  • Should be fun to watch, in the same way that NASCAR crashes and hockey fights are fun to watch.
  • Alright, this has gone on long enough.
  • Below are some photos from Flagstaff.
  • Have a great day.
  • All of life is all for Jesus.
