3 Reasons We’re Launching The Greenhouse

August 7, 2017  |  Luke Simmons

The Greenhouse is a new environment I’m leading to help leaders in any area of life grow and develop.

Here are three reasons why we’re doing this (and some FAQ’s below):

1. Existing ministry leaders need investment.

Sometimes the most overlooked people in a church are the existing leaders. There can be an assumption that they’re OK, so nobody keeps pouring into them.

The Greenhouse is an optional environment that exists to help these leaders keep growing if they want it.

2. We want to help those who are leading outside the church.

We say all the time that “all of life is all for Jesus,” which has to apply to leadership too. As a pastor, I don’t want to only be able to train people to do ministry inside in the church.

So The Greenhouse will help those who lead at home (moms are like family CEOs, right?), at offices, on sports fields, in fire stations, at schools, in retail stores, and–yes–in the church.

3. We want to identify new people who will use their leadership gifts for the kingdom.

Samuel Chand writes, “Your organization will grow only as fast as you can develop capable, godly leaders to broaden your base to connect meaningfully with more people.”

Our church is growing and will continue to grow in the coming years. I hope environments like this help identify new folks with leadership gifts who can be deployed inside and outside the church for kingdom purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a leader to do The Greenhouse?

No. It’s focused on leadership issues, but it’s for anyone who thinks they’d like to develop leadership skills, regardless of their current position(s).

How does it work?

It runs for 5 months at a time.

Each month has a theme (Gospel Leadership, Self Leadership, Interpersonal Leadership, Team Leadership, & Organizational Leadership).

Each month participants do the following:

  • Complete a short pre-workshop assignment.
  • Attend a monthly 2.5 hour workshop.
  • Complete a post-workshop assignment.
  • Talk with a coach to process and apply.

What if I can’t do it this time?

That’s fine. Our hope is to run it each semester with the same themes but new content. This will allow new folks to jump in and previous participants to keep going.

Do I have to be a Christian to participate?

Nope. We’ll be teaching from a Christian perspective, as we believe Jesus was the best leader in history. But participants are welcome regardless of their beliefs.

Are there other leadership development opportunities at Gateway?

Yes. Lots of informal development happens all the time. We also offer the Surge School, a wonderful program that has impacted hundreds of people from dozens of churches across the Valley.
