Monday Mind Dump (5/22/17)

Luke Simmons / May 22, 2017
family, mind dump, preaching

  • Yesterday was a fun way to finish a great weekend.
  • I drove home thinking, “I don’t know if today was spectacular, but I sure appreciate the steady shaping ministry of our church.”
  • It was a simple, straightforward service.
  • Not much in terms of bells and whistles.
  • Just singing, preaching, celebrating the next generation, and feasting at the Lord’s Table.
  • I’ll take that any week.
  • On the way to church yesterday morning I was praying, “Lord, I don’t think this is a particularly stand-out sermon. Would you take what I have and apply it to your people like only you can?”
  • Sure enough, I heard from a number of folks who indicated that they felt like God was speaking just to them or that the sermon addressed something they had just been thinking about.
  • All I can do is thank God for answering my prayers and being faithful to his word.
  • He’s gracious and he gets the glory.
  • Saw a few tweets yesterday that grabbed my attention:

  • I’m thankful to be in a church where so many people come to be edified and encouraged rather than critical.
  • I’m also thankful that the church is more than the Sunday show — but the community of people who live out the love of Jesus to one another all week.
  • This one was interesting too:

  • I always like seeing how other preachers prep and what their notes look like.
  • That anyone could (a) come up with something like this in the first place, (b) make sense of it, and (c) internalize it to the point that you could preach with basically no notes (like Keller d0es) is truly remarkable.
  • I guess Keller continues to amaze me.
  • I mentioned that it was a great weekend.
  • Had a great time seeing comedian Nate Bargatze on Friday night.
  • Dang that guy is funny.
  • We actually got to meet him afterward.
  • We were just waiting in the lobby for some folks in our group who were in the restroom.
  • He came out for a bit and we grabbed a photo.
  • It was fun.
  • Then Saturday was a few different parties — a birthday party and an end-of-the-season softball party.
  • Been fun to build some new friendships with some of the other parents from the softball team.
  • I especially like the chance to build new relationships with people who don’t know me as their pastor.
  • It was a great experience and I think a bunch of us will stick together in future seasons.
  • I’m already praying about the questions that will come in next Sunday for “Ask Anything.”
  • Should be really interesting.
  • Molly had a question for me yesterday about part of the text of Acts 12 and I didn’t have much of a good answer for her.
  • So, lower your expectations.
  • Somebody told me about a church where they said they were doing live Q & A and people sent in questions but the pastor had actually just preselected the questions and ignored what everyone sent in.
  • That’s brutal.
  • Maybe after this is all over I’ll wish we had done that. 😉
  • Have a meeting this week with our architect.
  • Things are coming along well with the design.
  • I think just a few more meetings before things start getting submitted to the city.
  • A number of other fun meetings this week, including one with our elder candidates to work through their Enneagram personality results.
  • I think its a fascinating tool.
  • If you’re familiar with it, you may already know what I am — a 3 with pretty high 7 and 8 too.
  • I like it because it helps you see the shadow sides of how you relate to people in addition to the strengths you can leverage in life-giving ways.
  • Big week at home too.
  • Last week of school–wow, these kids are excited!
  • And it’s Molly’s birthday on Friday.
  • Lots of opportunities to celebrate and lots of things I need God’s help with this week.
  • Well, thanks for reading.
  • Peace.
