Monday Mind Dump (1/8/18)

mind dump

  • How’s your 2018 going so far?
  • Mine has been pretty good so far.
  • My parents surprised our kids for Christmas with a trip to Disneyland last week.
  • We hadn’t been there in about 5 years, so it was a first for Mary and Hank.
  • Mary is just barely 42″ which made it where she could ride most things.
  • It was beautiful weather and such a great environment.
  • I’m amazed by Disney.
  • There’s not a single part of it that seems run down or sloppy.
  • There are some things that are pretty outdated (Tomorrowland — ironic, eh?), but nothing looks beat up or run down.
  • And when you think that every day is somebody’s first time to Disneyland and it’s got to be magical, it’s pretty amazing how well they deliver.
  • I spent a few hours on Friday walking around the park while Hank slept in the stroller and it was fun to people watch and take it all in.
  • I learned that people like to look at their phones.
  • I want to give the benefit of the doubt that they were using the app for wait times or trying to connect with other friends in the park, but that may be a little generous…
  • I also left wondering what women wore before black leggings were invented.
  • Those seem like they must be pretty remarkable pieces of clothing.
  • Here are a few photos from the trip:

  • In other news, I got to go see my niece get baptized yesterday morning.
  • I was already scheduled not to preach, so it worked out well.
  • Nice to get to be part of a family thing that happens on Sunday — not typical.
  • Then had a great lunch with some elders as we interviewed a candidate for our Kids ministry (elders don’t make the final decision, but we give input).
  • Then loved getting to come to Gateway at 5pm.
  • I would absolutely come to this church even if I wasn’t the pastor.
  • The whole experience was so good and encouraging.
  • I was moved by the music, challenged by Josh’s exhortation to grow in prayer for Turkey, and motivated by Seth’s sermon.
  • This week I’m back at it, gearing up for our Ephesians series.
  • It’s going to be about a 40 week walk through the book, which will definitely be the smallest chunks I’ve ever taken in preaching a book.
  • Should be a good new experience.
  • The book breaks down into a number of mini-series, so I don’t think it will feel like a long, dreary slog. (see Gateway’s preaching schedule here)
  • We’ve made a bunch of resources available to help people dig into the book more.
  • One I’m especially excited about (and a little scared of) is memorizing the book.
  • I’ve started using this plan and so far it’s going well (one week in!)
  • My dream is for a bunch of people to join me and possibly take a part in reciting it at the end of the series.
  • So that kicks off this Sunday.
  • In the meantime, I’ll watch the College Football National Championship (because I’m a football fan — even though the SEC matchup makes me sick), try to adjust to kids back to school, and will be praying for our students as they head to camp next weekend.
  • Have a great week!
