Luke Simmons

Lead Pastor
About Luke

I’ve been married to Molly since 2001. We have three daughters, Abby, Caitlin and Mary and one son, Hank. We like to laugh, play, swim, watch football, and learn.

Without Jesus, my life has been marked by arrogance, selfishness, and pride. I took pride in my morality and looked down on others who didn’t seem as good as me. God took ahold of my life through a neighbor who invested in my life as a 17 year old and challenged me to read the book of John with him, where I encountered who Jesus really is. Jesus is my treasure because he rescued me from the guilt, shame and punishment of sin that I deserve and he gave me new life in him. He is the King of kings and I want to live for him. Jesus is changing my life now by allowing me to see that I never outgrow my need for him. I am more sinful than I ever dared believe, and more loved and accepted by Jesus than I ever dared hope.

I graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in Speech Communication, where I played baseball and married the prettiest girl on the swim team. I also have an M.A. in Missional Theology from Covenant Theological Seminary, in partnership with the Missional Training Center in Tempe, AZ.

Matthew Braselton

Associate Pastor, Operations
About Matthew

I married my wonderful wife Kristie in 2001, and we are blessed with 5 crazy kids: Bethany, Harper, Benjamin, Judah, and Shiloh.

God graciously saved me at a very young age, and the faith of my youth carried me through some very difficult times in my family growing up. Through high school and college, God continued to grow me as he tried, tested, and refined my faith and knowledge of Him. I have been serving in ministry since 1998, and vocationally since 2004. God continues to show me more and more of my sin as I mature in Him, but He also shows me more and more of Himself and His grace that covers me, for which I am eternally grateful!

I have a B.A. in Finance and an M.B.A. from Arizona State University, as well as an M.A. in Missional Theology from Covenant Seminary, in partnership with the Missional Training Center.

About Geoffrey

I married my wife Darcy over 17 years ago after meeting her at Northern Arizona University. We have four kids, 3 boys and a girl. We are currently foster parents for newborns up to 1 year old.

Being raised in a Christian home, I knew the stories and who Jesus was yet he didn’t invade my heart with the truth of the Gospel until my junior year of college. It is sobering when I knew my sin separated me from Jesus and I needed a savior. I am thankful He continues to grow me and reveal how wonderful He is to me.

Seth Troutt

Associate Pastor, Adults
About Seth

I have been married to Taylor since 2013. We have a dog named Calvin, do CrossFit, and like Netflix and pizza.

If you would have met me in high school you would have met one of the most destructively self-righteous people you have ever known. I loved to win arguments and make fun of people. God placed faithful pastors into my life who graciously, yet firmly, called me on my pride and moralism; I knew about the gospel of grace, but internally I was living out of a gospel of moral conformity that led simultaneously to insecurity and arrogance. The gospel — that the kingdom of God has come near in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus — has again and again and again shown me how good, gracious, glorious, and great the Lordship of God really is.

I am a graduate of Arizona State University and have a Master of Divinity in Biblical Communication from Phoenix Seminary. Before coming onto Redemption Gateway’s staff in 2016, I served at Grace Community Church in Tempe for seven years.

John Kronwald

Redemption Communities Pastor
About John

I am so blessed to be married to my long-time friend and high-school sweetheart, Lindsay. We have four kids: Jack, Emma, James, & Kate. We play hard and laugh often!

I’m so thankful to have been raised by parents that loved Jesus deeply. Growing up in the church, I had many people teaching me the truths of God week after week. God used all of those influences in the home and in the church to grab a hold of my heart at a young age. By the time I finished high school I really saw my relationship with Jesus deepen. I began to own my faith and live it out even when it was costly. God used (and continues to use) people and circumstances to refine me, stretch me, and grow me more and more into the image of his Son.

Jodi Cherney

Redemption Communities Admin
About Jodi

I have been married to my husband Kyle since 2010. We spend a lot of time outdoors hiking, rock climbing, and running.

I grew up in a Christian family in western Michigan and was surrounded by Christ-like people who lovingly invested their time in me. As I got older, I started to understand the depths of my sin, and along with it, the overwhelming span of God’s grace and power to renew and redeem all of creation. On my own, I desire control over my life and I fear the unknown. However, the Holy Spirit is continually refining me, teaching me, and helping me to rely on Him.

I assist John Kronwald, the Redemption Communities Pastor, with supporting and connecting people to Redemption Communities as well as helping with the Start Here classes. I am here to help new attendees and members make connections with ministry and group leaders.

Mark Andress

Care Pastor
About Mark

I married my wife Patti in May of 2006, and we have five absolutely crazy but totally awesome kids: Sophie, Brennan, Ashlyn, Kinley, and Piper.

I grew up in and around church, but had wandered away from the Lord after our family had suffered through some pretty traumatic events at our church. During my senior year of high school, God called me to himself, and for the first time I began to see that behind everything I had gone through, there was God who loved and cared for me deeply – a God who had suffered for me and therefore I could trust in the midst of my own suffering.

As I grew in my understanding of God’s grace and love, I became more deeply involved in different church ministries like music, missions, and discipleship. Over time, God created a desire in me to move in care and compassion toward those who are hurting, and to help teach and lead others in the church to do the same.

Josh Watt

Associate Pastor, Next Gen
About Josh

I’m married to my best friend Aubrey. She is a beautiful wife and loving Mom, and she makes coming home sweet. I’m Dad to my three boys: Elijah, Roman, and Jude . As a family we like to eat and when we are not eating we are usually thinking about what we want to eat next.

I became a follower of Jesus at a FCA baseball camp as a high school senior. On July 4, 2000, God gracioulsy showed me that my attempt to find joy in this life apart from Him was silly and utlimately sinful. From that day I began the lifelong process of following Jesus. It is interesting though how God often has to take things away from us in order for us to know Him deeper.

After college, I moved away for graduate school. I moved away from home, family, friends, and everything comfortable. I had nothing left to distract me…. so for the first time I opened the Bible and read it cover to cover. For the first time in my young faith, Jesus was bigger than just my personal savior. He was the center of my story, the center of the Bible, the center of human history, and He was the center and source of all joy. I have never recovered from this truth.

Joshua Ruiz

Jr. High Pastor
About Joshua

I am a born and raised Arizona Native.  I come from a crazy blended family of 8 (3 brothers, 2 sisters).  I’ve lived most my life in the east valley, attending Red Mountain High School and graduating from Skyline High School in 2001. Immediately following high school I was employed at Empire Machinery (a Caterpillar Machinery Dealer) and until recently, have been there for 15 years.  I attended Southwestern Bible College in Phoenix AZ (now known as Arizona Christian University) for two years before changing gears after meeting my wonderful wife, Lauren Ruiz and marrying her January 22, 2005.  By God’s grace our marriage is hoppin’, resulting in our 4 crazy great kiddos: Aidyn, Isabel, Violet, and Nox.  We run pretty fast through our daily lives, not really leaving much possibility for a boring day in our home.  Group gatherings, good food, and good time spent together minister to our souls.

I grew up in a small Baptist church in Mesa where I came to the saving grace of Jesus Christ at a young age.  Growing up knowing the truth and goodness of God, I found myself in great distress in my late teens and early twenties as I struggled to live out what I swore so deeply to believe, sadly proving to have significantly weaker flesh than the Christians I considered true believers.  God’s grace however was much deeper than the depths of my sin, and learning that truth has brought me to greater love and worship of Him.  My life is His and I long to serve him until my dying breath.  Should it ever be said  that I am a passionate worshipper of God, it would have to hold true that the greatest sinners always make the greatest worshippers.  Its why I sing so loud!  To Christ be all glory!  I’ve had the privilege of serving God’s people in worship leading for over 15 years now, and look forward to many more.  I love the church, I love serving the body of Christ, and love serving in youth ministries!

Robbin Howey

Redemption Students Administrative Coordinator
About Robbin

I have been married to Jim since June 1993.  We moved to Arizona from San Diego one week after we were married and have made the Phoenix area our home. We have six amazing kids (four of which are teenagers) Kyla, Kevin, Rylie, Reagan, Jordyn and Presley.

I grew up in a Christian home and my mom was very dedicated to making sure my brothers and I were raised in church.  It wasn’t until I went away to college that I fully understood my daily need for Jesus.  Since then, Jesus continues to make himself bigger and bigger in my life.  I love spending time in the Word and am constantly amazed by God’s character and unchanging love for me.

Arnold Ruiz

Redemption Kids Director
About Arnold

I am married to my fun, hard-working wife Ai and we have been blessed with four wonderful kids: Ava, Asher, Aila, and Alyosha. We enjoy food, family, laughing, and learning new things.

I grew up in church, but that did not save me from the solemn reality that we have all been sinned against and yet we ourselves sin against others. Indeed, left to myself, I have an incurable propensity to seek after my own good and my own desires at the expense of others, in direct rebellion of the One who created me to live otherwise.

But thanks be to God that He found me and rescued me from the grip of sin and death! By God’s wonderful grace I have found his son Jesus Christ to be beautiful, wise to the utmost, patient, profoundly loving, and powerful to save. So I look to him as my supreme authority. And my trust in him has not been misplaced. He is a friend to sinful people like me, a rock in times of trouble, a glad giver of wisdom to navigate a complicated world, and a source of incomparable joy. By nature I am rebellious, and I wrestle and struggle and fall and doubt. But he is ever merciful and faithful to me; he is my peace and my sanity.

I love to teach and to tell people about what Jesus Christ has done for me and how awesome he is. In my current phase of life, God shows me about himself most through my relationships as a husband and father, through my relationship to his body the church, and by observing in the world the futility of chasing after anything else but Christ. For nothing and nobody can thrill a heart like he can.

Jen Natzke

R/Kids Administrative Coordinator
About Jen

I have been married to Derek since February 2003. We have six kids together: Berlynn, Alana, Liam, Paisley, Charli, Roman. Their ages span from teenagers to preschool.  We love to be active and run lots of races and have fun at the gym.

I grew up in a family that was called Christian, however, grace and acceptance was very merit based. If I performed well, things would go well. I never wanted to be the one to underperform. My understanding of grace was limited to the one time sacrifice on the cross. Jesus died for my sins, but you better do your part.

Derek was Catholic when I married him which didn’t help my merit based concept of grace. Through many years of prayers Derek decided to step out of the Catholic Church and we happened upon Redemption. This began the transformation.

My understanding of grace is no longer limited to the past. I know see the grace in the future promises but also in every present moment. It is so reliving to know (and believe) that Christ’s one time sacrifice was enough. I am accepted and can stand before the Father because of HIS merit and not my own. The freedom that this brings is life changing and I never grow tired of seeing how God grows me in this every day.

Kristine Lynch

Redemption Kids Preschool Coordinator
About Kristine

In 2003, I married my best friend, Aaron, who I met in high school. We have two sweet daughters – Emily (13) and Lauren (4), and a rambunctious yellow lab – Raleigh. We currently live in Gilbert, but have called much of the United States home over the past 10 years, including Michigan (no thanks!), North Carolina and Oregon. It’s safe to say that we made it back to our home state of Arizona and are here to stay forever… Unless of course the Lord calls us to Hawaii.

As far as my story goes… I grew up in the church, attended Christian schools, and yet had no love for the Lord or realization of my need for Christ and His work. To anyone looking in, my life looked like one of a Christian woman, but my heart was prideful and rebellious and far from Him. After Aaron and I were married, and had our first daughter Emily in 2004, I chose to stop living my so-called-Christian-life. I was done with being told what to do and how to live, and I purposefully walked away from church, Christian friends, my husband and certainly the Lord. Thankfully, in His extreme mercy, Christ seeks out lost sheep. He did not leave me in my sin and darkness and rebellion, but after hitting rock bottom in July 2007, He saved me. He revealed to me the depths of my sin, I repented, He forgave me and saved me to life. God graciously restored my marriage and though life has been anything but easy these past 11 years with multiple miscarriages, surgeries, cross country moves and more, the Lord has been faithful to me. “For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.” Psalm 56:13. I hope that my story can be used to encourage others that the Lord is the giver of life, and is so ready and willing to forgive and restore His lost sheep.

I’m my spare time you’ll find me enjoying my kiddos, working on DIY home projects, cross fitting and weightlifting, exploring the great outdoors, and hitting the trails with my husband. I’m passionate about serving God through loving others and living life to the fullest!

Laura LeFevre

Redemption Kids Elementary Coordinator
About Laura

I have been married to my wonderful husband, Blaine, since February 2003. We have 6 crazy kids: Chelsey, Cheyanne, Shelby, Ben, Julianna, and Emmanuel, as well as 3 rambunctious grand kids (so far).

Even though I grew up going to a legalistic church where salvations always seemed on the line, I always suspected that God was much different than the way He was portrayed there. While I have called myself a Christian my whole life, it wasn’t until I was 24 that I fully surrendered my life to Jesus. A blessed series of events occurred surrounding the tragic death of my toddler nephew which led my entire family into a true relationship with Jesus. Since then, God has led me on a journey (sometimes with my cooperation and sometimes not) drawing me deeper in love and understanding of who He is and how perfect His plans are.

I am an educator at heart. I love teaching people of all ages, but kids are the most fun. Woven into my love of teaching God has planted a passion in my heart to fulfill the great commission to go and make disciples. I believe that the classrooms at Redemption Gateway are a mission field and I am blessed to be a part of the faith stories born and nurtured there.

Tim Campbell

Director of Global Ministry
About Tim

My wife, Barbara, and I are empty nesters. We have two grown and married daughters and 5 grandchildren.

I don’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t aware of the presence of God. At the age of 5 a friend told me during a game of hide-and-go-seek that if I believed Jesus was God’s Son I would go to heaven and I said in all sincerity that I do believe that. At the age of 14 I told God that I still believed and wanted to go to to heaven, but I wanted to run my own life. In time, I learned that God’s salvation and His lordship are inseparable.

In seeking to repair the resulting damage at 16 and 17, I turned to the Bible. As my doctrinal knowledge increased, others began to witness to my family and we all came to a saving faith that we understood as grace given to sinners by our Lord and God who personally paid the price for our sins. I don’t know if was saved at 5 or at 17. I do know that I was God’s and He would not let me go.

Thirty-four years later I tend to think more in terms of how God has faithfully grown and used a sinner like me in ways I never could have dreamed of and that is every bit as miraculous as my salvation.

Cristina Adams

Administrative Supervisor
About Cristina

I married my high school sweetheart, Clay, in 2002.  We have been blessed with two handsome boys, Jacob and Joshua.

I currently help support the leadership team with daily administrative tasks and coordinate events within our congregation and community.

God has always been patient with me and I have always been impatient with Him. I had a stubborn heart and felt I could do better by controlling my future. I was invited to church in 2008 and I was skeptical of what I was going to encounter. I was overwhelmed by the spirit and energy of God’s presence in the worship center and asked for His forgiveness. Immediately, I jumped into God’s word and I grew increasingly impatient that God did not show Himself right away to me. Out of rebellion and anger, I stopped attending and returned to my old ways. Several years later, a friend recognized I needed help and invited me to service at Redemption Gateway. That day, the spirit filled my heart and made me realize, that this is where I needed to be. My heart has been softened and my mind has been opened to receive the gospel. God has shown me new life because I started to trust Him. I can now see God’s work on a daily basis and I hope to share the good news with those like me.

Gina Mendez

Administrative Coordinator
About Gina

I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart, Josh, since July 2000. We have 3 daughters, Elise, Abby, and Ila.  We moved to Arizona from the mid-west in 2007. Gateway has been my home church since the Second Mile plant began.

I grew up going to church but it was never anything I gave much thought to. I didn’t know what it meant to have a relationship with God. My early twenties were a mess, trying to do life with one foot in the world and one foot in the word and I was failing. At age 25 God revealed to me the depth of my sin and how much of a mess I was without him. No matter how good my intentions were I couldn’t choose God on my own and needed him to rescue me from myself and give me a heart for Him. I cried out to him in repentance and he changed me forever.  I sought out a mentor who poured her time and biblical wisdom into my life. Realizing that He had forgiven me and accepts me even before I have repented was huge for me. I started serving at church and building relationships and community. Gateway feels like home and family to me.

I am so excited for this new roll on Staff. My administrative tasks will include Volunteer Coordinating and Event Planning along with assisting the other Admins and Pastors with various tasks.

About Jeremy

Brooke and I have been married since 2010. We have a son Tyler, and three daughters: Madalyn, Emily and Lauryn. We love spending time together. We enjoy riding bikes, going to the park, wresting in the family room or just taking a long drive to nowhere so mommy and daddy can talk while the kids take naps!

I have been a follower of Jesus since I was a young child. He continues to show himself to me in new ways. He shows me areas of sin in my life and graciously proves that He is mighty to save and that His blood is enough to cover me. He is continually teaching me that all my efforts to be “good enough” are in fact foolishness. He has given me His spirit and a desire to glorify Him.

I attended classes at The Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, Ohio where I attained certification as a sound engineer. I enjoy recording music, running sound and expressing my creativity through music.

Brian Westlund

Facilities Director
About Brian

I was born on a farm in rural Wisconsin where my family was very involved in the local church.  As in many personal stories, after leaving the area I grew up in, I slowly drifted from church and consequently my relationship with God suffered.  After moving to Arizona, I started attending church on a regular basis which began restore and grow my relationship with Jesus. Volunteering for some time, I was actually hired on as IT Director at the church I was attending.  Since being on staff for a couple of churches, I have run small businesses (including my own) for a number of years, with experience in IT to heavy equipment to commercial buildings.

I haven’t felt a real solid connection to a church for a while until a couple in my small group asked me to try Redemption Gateway with them.  After the first Sunday I was hooked, and began attending regularly. Gateway is home to me because of the incredible humbleness and authenticity of the leadership.  Anyone who has spent any amount of time with staff would have to admit what totally open, caring group of people we have here.

On Being a Local Congregation of Redemption Church

Redemption church is multi-congregational in structure. This means that a central governing body provides structure, direction, and support for the ministry of each local congregation. Local congregations, like Redemption Gateway, are united and collaborative, but each has its own leadership and is free to contextualize its efforts. Click on the link below to learn more about the overall structure of Redemption.

We are a non-denominational church with a Reformed view of salvation. We believe that all of life is all for Jesus. We have been saved by grace through faith, which is itself a gift. That gift empowers us to be a transformed people who embody His redemptive power and participate in the renewal of all things.

We are a sent people. As the church we are not called to turn inward and build our own kingdom. We are called to turn outward and give ourselves to the spread of the Gospel, the establishment of healthy local churches, and the multiplication of disciples. This is a call to invest beyond our church, beyond our tribe, and beyond our generation.

The Five Loves

Our goal is not merely to connect people, but to make disciples who are growing in what we call The Five Loves. This philosophy shapes every environment at Gateway.

Community and Global Initiatives

We strongly believe that all members of the body of Christ are sent people, called to proclaim and demonstrate the gospel to the world. Therefore our community and global efforts should never be limited to structured programs. However, in response to the needs in our community, and God's heart for the nations, we do build global partnerships and facilitate opportunities to participate in God's mission of blessing the nations in Christ.
